“The Rocket” a self-contained composter in Westchester

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino leads a ribbon cutting for “The Rocket”, at the Westchester County Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF) in Valhalla, Nov. 20, 2015. The Rocket is a self-contained composter for on-site treatment of organic waste. This is part of Rob Astorino’s second phase of his Food Waste Reduction Initiative. Participants with Arc of Westchester, with training grants from the Westchester Community Foundation, will work at the facility three days a week as part of an employment preparation and training program. The compost from the Rocket will be used at The Food Bank for Westchester’s gardens as well as the county’s Department of Parks.
