There is no silver bullet for food waste but there are a number of alternatives to landfill!

So far, nobody has come up with a food waste solution that suits every site and as I’ve been working in this arena for 13 years now I know how frustrating this is first hand!

At the moment, food waste is a very hot topic and every week there seem to be yet more alternative solutions appearing on the market, but all of them are variations on themes that have been around for a number of years and whilst they may be different shapes, sizes and colours with more and more amazing claims to be the next big thing, they tend to fall into one of the following 5 categories:

Anaerobic Digestion (AD), Composting, De-hydration (drying), De-Watering (pulping) and Digestion.

All of these solutions are available as on-site food waste solutions and they all have a place in the market as they all treat food wastes and reduce or eliminate the need for collection from the site that generates the food waste. They all help reduce our dependency on Landfill and in my book this is a great thing. As an aid for our customers, we have been putting together a comparison table for all the on-site food waste solutions that Tidy Planet offer which covers four out of the five categories above and compares them to the only off-site alternatives which are landfill and collection for 3rd party treatment in composting or AD facilities.

What really surprised us when we put this chart together wasn’t just the total costs (purchase and 5 year running costs) for these various solutions but how expensive the off-site solutions were by comparison. I guess as it is only a few quid week for the bins to be collected we don’t tend to notice it, BUT IT ADDS UP!

We’d really like feedback on this comparison table,  so please feel free to get in touch and tell us how you would score these alternative solutions.
